WHAT’S IN A NAME (AND LOGO)?
In heraldry, the griffin’s amalgamation of lion and eagle denotes strength, courage and leadership. Since classical antiquity, griffins were known for guarding treasures and priceless possessions.
1933 and the lessons of history
Our stylised version of the griffin has the number 33 embedded in the mane of the mythical beast. This is a reference to the fateful year of 1933. This was the first year of gains on the US equity markets following the Wall Street stock market crash of 1929. 1933 also signalled the introduction of the Glass-Stegall act in the USA which sought to permanently end bank runs and the dangerous bank practices that created them.** 1933 also heralded the end of democracy in Germany and the relentless march to war. The lessons of history are humbling but important. History does not repeat itself, but it often rhymes.***

* European Economic Area countries plus Switzerland and the UK.
** The Glass-Stegall act effectively separated commercial banking from investment banking and also created the FDIC bank deposit insurance scheme. Most of the act was repealed in 1999, having unintended consequences.
*** Often attributed to Mark Twain.
